Manipur burning: Rapid Action Force deployed in Bishnupur, situation grim

Imphal, 16 June: The Rapid Action Force has been deployed in Bishnupur district of Manipur. The situation remains tense in the entire area. Movement has been disrupted due to a large crowd blocking the road.

Police said on Sunday that the situation became tense in Tronglaobi Awang Leikai of Bishnupur district of Manipur since Saturday evening when two trucks were set on fire by the local mob. Construction material for a bridge was being carried on the trucks. Four trucks were going towards Churachandpur when the mob stopped them in Tronglaobi area and set them on fire. One of the trucks was completely burnt. While the other truck was partially burnt.

At the same time, the other two trucks were saved due to the promptness of the security forces. The trucks were loaded in Sekmai for Singhat of Churachandpur. These trucks were carrying material required for a bridge under construction on National Highway No. 102-B Churachandpur-Tuivai Road.

Bishnupur police and central forces immediately reached the spot and fired three to four rounds of tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and control the fire. Rapid Action Force (RAF) forces immediately reached the spot to stabilize the area and control the rising tension. The situation remains tense in the entire area. Security forces have been deployed on a large-scale.
