Murtaza convicted in Gorakhnath temple attack: sentence to be pronounced on Jan 30th

Gorakhpur, 28 January: The NIA/ATS special court on Friday convicted accused Ahmed Murtaza Abbasi in the case of attack on PAC jawans deployed in the security of Gorakhnath temple. Special Judge Vivekananda Sharan Tripathi fixed January 30 for hearing on the point of sentencing.

On April 4, 2022, the report of the attack on PAC jawans was lodged by Vinay Kumar Mishra at Gorakhnath police station. According to the plaintiff vinay Kumar Mishra, PAC jawan Anil Kumar Paswan, posted in the security of Gorakhnath temple, was seriously injured by the accused,who hit him with a stick and tried to snatch his weapon too. His rifle fell on the road. When another jawan came to save them, he was attacked with a sharp weapon with the intention of killing him.

Other policemen present on the spot picked up injured jawan and his rifle. During this, Ahmad Murtuza ran towards the post of PAC while waving sickle and shouting slogans of ‘Nara-e-Takbeer, Allah Hu Akbar’. This created an atmosphere of panic among the people. His hand was hit with a big bamboo. Its dandy fell down. After which Murtaza was caught by the jawans.

A religious book written in Urdu language was also recovered from the arrested Ahmed Murtaza. According to public prosecutor MK Singh, on the basis of the evidence obtained during the investigation, sections 16/18/20/40 of the Prevention of Unlawful Activities Act have been invoked in this case. The investigation was handed over to ATS. On 25 April 2022, by presenting in the special court, the ATS had also obtained remand by taking police custody in this case.
