New Delhi, 15 July: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has approached the Supreme Court against the anticipatory bail granted by Kerala High Court to former Kerala DGP Sibi Mathew in the case of implicating scientist Nambi Narayanan in the ISRO espionage case.
A bench headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar ordered that the petition be tagged along with other related matters. The hearing of the case will be on July 27.
Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, appearing for CBI during the hearing, said that this petition should also be tagged along with the petitions filed against the anticipatory bail granted by the High Court to four more police officers.
The Kerala High Court had granted anticipatory bail to police officers S Vijayan, Thampi S Durgadutt, RB Sreekumar and former IB officer S Jayaprakash on August 13, 2021.
The court had ordered a CBI inquiry into the matter on April 15, 2021. The Supreme Court had submitted the report of the committee headed by former judge Justice DK Jain to the CBI.
Nambi Narayanan, who was engaged in making indigenous cryogenic engines, was arrested by the Kerala Police in 1994. He was accused of selling technology to foreigners. Later in the CBI investigation the whole case was found to be false.
On September 14, 2018, the Supreme Court had also ordered a compensation of Rs 50 lakh to Narayanan. Nambi Narayanan, in his application, had sought action against former Kerala DGP Sibi Mathew and others. Sibi Mathew had investigated the espionage scandal.
