New Delhi, 19 November: On Tuesday, the government was asked about the possibility of being awarded the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honor, to freedom fighter and revolutionary Veer Savarkar, in response to which the government replied that decisions are made from time to time regarding names sent from the side. No formal recommendation is required in this regard.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Mumbai North Gopal Shetty had asked the government whether it had taken any step to award Bharat Ratna to Veer Savarkar.

Minister of State(MoS) for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said in his written reply that the recommendations of the Bharat Ratna Award are received regularly from different sources. However, no formal recommendation is required for this award. Decisions about the award of Bharat Ratna are taken from time to time.

It is noteworthy that Shiv Sena strongly demanded the award of Bharat Ratna to Veer Savarkar. The Congress party, a potential ally of the Shiv Sena in connection with government formation in Maharashtra, has been strongly opposed to Veer Savarkar and his ideology.
