Paris Olympics: Overweight Vinesh Phogat disqualified from 50 kg women’s wrestling final

New Delhi, 07 August: Indian female wrestler Vinesh Phogat has suffered a major setback. She has been eliminated before the final match of the 50 kg weight category event of women’s wrestling at the Paris Olympics 2024.

She has been disqualified before the final match due to 100gm overweight during the weigh-in this moring. Indian wrestler Phogat defeated Cuba’s Yusnelis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals on Tuesday. With this, she became the first Indian female wrestler to reach the final of the Olympics.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) confirmed this and said that the Indian team is saddened that Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the women’s wrestling 50 kg category. Despite the best efforts made by the team overnight, she weighed a few grams more than 50 kg this morning. No further comment will be made by the team at this time. Vinesh Phogat was to face American wrestler Sarah Hildebrand in the final match. This match will be played at 12:30 am (August 8).
