Kanpur, 27 December: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the 54th convocation of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kanpur on Tuesday.

In view of this, tight security arrangements have been made. Along with this, in view of Corona, the IIT has made special arrangements for bio-bubbles for all the prominent people present including the Prime Minister. The risk of getting infected in the bio-bubble protection cycle is low.

The IIT management is taking special precautions regarding the safety of the attendees ahead of the convocation to be held in hybrid mode. The program will be attended by the Prime Minister Modi, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

The IIT Kanpur Deputy Director Prof S. Ganesh said that it is our duty to ensure the safety of all of us. Hence, in view of the ever-changing scenario of Corona pandemic, we are taking extra precaution inside the campus. First tests are to be done to check the health of all the people who physically attend the programme. This is to ensure utmost safety for all the attendees so as not to hamper the joy of the occasion.

He explained that Bio-bubble is a concept which has been recently developed in the field of sports, particularly in cricket where a bio-secure environment is created to reduce the risk of contamination from the corona virus. Although, this concept has now become prevalent in many areas as well. This is probably the first time that a higher educational institution has made such arrangements for its convocation.

The IITs conducted the convocation on virtual platform last year in view of Corona and this year is being conducted in hybrid mode. The institute has made arrangements to conduct RT-PCR test of all the attendees a day before the convocation. There will also be a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) once again on the day of the convocation before the gates for the venue are opened.

Deputy Director Prof Ganesh informed that a total of 1723 students will receive degrees and 80 awards and medals will be given on the occasion of the convocation. In the second session of the convocation, 21 students will also be awarded the Outstanding PhD Thesis Award. Apart from this, three eminent persons- Prof Rohini M Godbole, Senapati ‘Chris’ Gopalakrishnan and Ajay Chakraborty will be given honorary doctorates.
