New Delhi, May 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting to review the preparations for cyclone “Remal” which has developed in the North Bay of Bengal at his residence 7, Lok Kalyan Marg this morning.
According to the IMD forecast, the cyclone is likely to cross Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara, southwest of Mongla (Bangladesh) by midnight today and it is likely to cause rain in West Bengal and northeastern states. According to the
Prime Minister’s Office, he was told in the meeting that the National Crisis Management Committee is in regular touch with the Government of West Bengal. All fishermen have been advised not to go to the South Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. About one lakh people are being evacuated to safe places. The IMD is also providing information support to Bangladesh with regular updates.
The Prime Minister said that the Government of India has given full support to the state government and should continue to do so. He said the Home Ministry should monitor the situation and review it after the cyclone makes landfall to provide necessary assistance for restoration.
The Prime Minister has directed that in addition to the 12 NDRF teams already deployed in West Bengal and one in Odisha, more teams be kept on standby which can move within an hour. The Indian Coast Guard will deploy its assets for any emergency.
He said a strict vigil should be kept on ports, railways and highways to avoid any untoward incident.
The Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Cabinet Secretary, Home Secretary, Director General of NDRF, Director General of IMD and Member Secretary of NDMA were also present.
