Rahul Gandhi compares EVMs as ‘Black Box AI’ after Elon Musk raises concern on EVMs

New Delhi, 16 June: Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader, stated on Sunday that EVMs in India are a black box that no one is permitted to see, and that severe questions about transparency in India’s election process have been raised.

When institutions lack accountability, democracy becomes a farce and prone to fraud, Gandhi said, tagging a media article that said a relative of Shiv Sena’s candidate, who won the polls by 48 votes in Mumbai’s North West, possessed a phone that unlocks an EVM. Elon Musk’s article on X, in which he discussed abolishing EVMs, was also tagged by the previous Congress president.

“We should remove computerised voting devices. The chance of being hacked by humans or AI, while tiny, is nonetheless unacceptable,” Musk stated in his post.

The opposition parties have been voicing concerns about EVMs for some time, and they sought a 100% count of the VVPAT slips, which was not granted.
