Aligarh, 28 April: Police reported on Friday that many unidentified people were arrested for performing namaz outside two mosques in the old city district in violation of prohibitory orders during Eid last week. City Superintendent of Police Kuldeep Singh Gunawat informed the media that clerics had guaranteed the district administration that no one would be permitted to pray on roadways outside mosques ahead of Eid.

“Despite such assurances, a large number of people offered prayers on the road outside the Eidgah ground under the jurisdiction of Delhi Gate Police Station and another mosque in a locality under the jurisdiction of Kotwali Police Station,” said the official, adding that the FIRs were filed on April 26. Police are investigating surveillance video from the day to identify people who took part in the outdoor prayers. Earlier, Kanpur police said they had booked around 2,000 persons on identical counts in three FIRs.
