Prayagraj, June 14: Around 8,500 English instructors from Uttar Pradesh’s 7,000 government and aided secondary schools would receive training in spoken English.

Teachers will learn the complexities of spoken English through a 132-module course produced by the English Language Training Institute (ELTI), Prayagraj, and housed on the Ministry of Education’s DIKSHA portal.

Director General of School Education Vijay Kiran Anand has given directives to all joint directors and district inspectors of schools (DIOSs) to coordinate and oversee training, which will commence on June 15. “Each module is about 10 minutes long, followed by an assessment test,” says ELTI principal Skand Shukla. The assessment exam must be passed in order to obtain a certificate of module completion and go to the next module.

He went on to say that, in addition to practising speaking English, the course covers phonetics, basic grammar, syntax, and frequent faults. “The course follows General Indian English, which is based on British pronunciation,” he explained.

According to the DG’s letter, the course is mandatory for all English instructors and will be available on the web for four months so that trainees can take it as many times as they want to improve their English skills.

The DG has also asked the field officers to submit to the appropriate authority a report on the status of completion by each instructor.
