Mumbai, 27 October: The Government Railway Police (GRP) team said that the sudden stampede of passengers on platform number one of Bandra Terminus on Sunday morning was due to the delay of the train. After this accident that happened this morning, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Neeraj Verma and his team visited the spot. Ten injured in this accident are being treated at Bandra Bhabha Hospital. The condition of two of them is critical, so both have been shifted to KEM Hospital. For now sale of platform tickets at Bandra Terminus has been banned.
The Government Railway Police (GRP) team said that a huge crowd of passengers had gathered at the Bandra Terminus railway station to go to their villages due to Deepawali and Chhath Puja, but when the passengers came to know that the Diwali Special Train 05051 to Gorakhpur was running 16 hours late, they rushed to board the train 22921 Gorakhpur Antyodaya Express, which was going to the same destination, causing a stampede in Bandra. The Antyodaya Express reached Bandra Terminus at around 2.55 pm, two hours before its scheduled time and all the passengers were trying to secure seats in it.
GRP team further apprised that the train has 18 coaches, including 16 general coaches and two for passengers with reservation. RPF (Railway Protection Force) and GRP teams were present at the station and were making the passengers stand in queue. However, when the train arrived, all the passengers broke the queue and people started running to the platform to board the train, due to which this accident happened.
Dr Sushil, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Bhabha Hospital, Bandra, said that 10 people have been injured in the incident. Five of them are undergoing treatment in the hospital. They have been identified as 30-year-old Ravindra Harihar Chuma, Ramsevak Ravindra Prasad Prajapati, Parmeshwar Sukhad Gupta, 27-year-old Sanjay Tilakram Kange and 18-year-old Divyanshu Yogendra Yadav. Their condition is stable. Three people admitted to the hospital this morning have been discharged after treatment. They have been identified as 40-year-old Shabbir Abdul Rehman, 25-year-old Mohammad Sharif Sheikh and 22-year-old Sameer Sheikh. Two patients have been shifted to King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in Parel for further treatment. Of these, 18-year-old Noor Mohammad Sheikh is on oxygen support and has suffered serious injuries in the incident. His condition is said to be critical.
Dr Sushil said that 19-year-old Indrajit Sahni has also suffered serious injuries in the incident and his condition is critical.
