Sugar output in India till Dec 31 is 111.80 lakh tonnes, approximately drop of 10%: ISMA

New Delhi, January 03: In the current sugar marketing year 2023-24 in the country, crushing of sugarcane in sugar mills has gained momentum. However, sugar production is still lower compared to the previous sugar marketing year.

In the current sugar marketing year, sugar production till December 31, 2023 stood at 111.80 lakh tonnes, whereas in the same period last year, sugar production was 121.20 lakh tonnes.

Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), an organization of sugar mills, said in a statement issued on Wednesday that in the sugar marketing year 2023-24, sugar production till December 31, 2023 stood at 111.80 lakh tonnes, compared to 121.20 lakh tonnes in the same period last year. Sugar was produced.

According to ISMA, the number of sugar mills operating this year is 512, whereas in the same period last year, 509 sugar mills were operating.

According to ISMA, this year especially in Maharashtra and Karnataka, sugar mills have started harvesting about 10-15 days later than last year, while the initial pace of harvesting remained slow till mid-November. However, at present crushing is in full swing in sugar mills across the country.

It is noteworthy that ISMA has expected a total production of 325 lakh tonnes of sugar (without use for ethanol) in the current sugar marketing year 2023-24.
