New Delhi, 17 August: It will now be mandatory for SIM vendors of mobile phones in the country to have police verification, which includes their biometric information. Now it will be mandatory to get the KYC of the concerned employee done while giving SIM to the businessmen taking a large number of business connections.
Union Telecom Minister Ashwani Vaishnav on Thursday announced two reforms related to the telecom sector. He said that the purpose of these reforms is only to protect the user from cyber fraud.
He said that the seller of the SIM will now be held responsible for selling it wrongly. For this, his police and biometric verification will be mandatory, and there will be a ban on a large number of SIM purchases. Business connections will be given their place. There will be a process for registration for business connections. It will be mandatory for every person getting this business connection to get their KYC done.
The minister was also informed about the achievements made through the communication portal. He said that 52 lakh fake connections have been eliminated through this. 67 thousand dealers have been blacklisted. 300 FIRs related to cyber fraud have been registered. 17 thousand mobile handsets have been blocked. 67 thousand WhatsApp messages have been blocked. One lakh payment accounts have been blocked. Three lakh stolen mobiles have been delivered to their owners. The number of SIMs to be taken on a single basis is still retained at nine.
The minister informed us that digital KYC will soon be made mandatory. While giving the SIM card, it will be necessary to verify the QR code of the Aadhaar card. This will eliminate Photoshop document manipulation.
