New Delhi, 26 February: Ukrainian President Zelensky has spoken to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged India to support the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Zelensky gave this information by tweeting on Saturday.
He said, โSpoke to the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi and apprised him of the current situation that there are more than one lakh Russian invaders on our land. They are firing indiscriminately on residential buildings.”
The President of Ukraine said in his tweet, โI request Prime Minister Modi to extend political support to Ukraine at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Together we must stop this attack.” President Zelensky tweeted details of the conversation in Ukrainian and in English.
It is noteworthy that during the UNSC meeting in New York on Friday, India did not participate in the vote on the resolution brought against the Russian attack. China and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) also did not participate in the vote along with India on the resolution moved by Albania and the US. 11 members of the council voted in favour of the motion. This resolution could not be passed due to Russia’s veto.
India’s Permanent Member of the United Nations TS Tirumurti, in his post-voting address, clarified India’s position, saying that we respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of every country in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations.
He regretted that no attempt was made to resolve the dispute through talks. He expressed concern about the safety of Indian students and citizens stranded in Ukraine.
During the meeting of the Security Council, the current President Wesley Nibenzia, as a representative of his country Russia, expressed his gratitude to the countries not supporting the censure motion.
Similarly, the Russian Embassy in New Delhi has also welcomed India’s approach, saying it is in line with the spirit of the unique strategic partnership between the two countries.
Meanwhile, a massive operation is underway to rescue Indian students and civilians stranded in Ukraine. A team of Indian students from neighbouring Hungary has left for India on an Air India flight from the capital Budapest.
