Lucknow, 9 Jan: Following a protest by Samajwadi Party members outside the Uttar Pradesh Police headquarters here against the detention of a party leader, the police have registered a case against unidentified individuals for alleged illegal assembly.

According to Shailendra Giri, a house officer at the Sushant Golf City police station, a case has been filed against unidentified individuals under sections 188 of the Indian Penal Code (disobedience to an order duly promulgated by a public servant) and 144 of the CrPC (prohibiting unlawful assembly). He stated that the case was registered late Sunday night.

Manish Jagan Agarwal, a Samajwadi Party leader, was detained on Sunday for reportedly posting insulting statements on social media in response to a complaint from a BJP youth wing office-bearer that she had been threatened with rape and death.

The complainant was also booked when the Samajwadi Party claimed she made derogatory statements against its MP Dimple Yadav. Soon after Agarwal, a member of the SP’s social media unit, was arrested, party chief Akhilesh Yadav and supporters rallied at the state police headquarters, demanding his release.
