Gorakhpur, 14 Oct: An official in Gorakhpur claimed on Saturday that a cop was fired after he and a colleague were detained for narcotics trafficking.
He said that four policemen from the neighboring Maharajganj district were suspended for assisting the two in smuggling the charas (cannabis) obtained from Nepal. Sub-Inspector Ravindra Shukla, a native of Lucknow, was assigned to the Gorakhpur summons cell.
According to Superintendent of Police (city) K K Vishnoi, he and his colleague Kulveer Singh were detained on Thursday and 33 kg of charas was confiscated from their possession.
“In a joint operation, Gorakhpur and Maharajganj police apprehended two smugglers with charas worth crores of rupees in the international market. One of the smugglers works for the police,” the SP stated.
On the basis of a tip, the two males were apprehended near Dharamshala police chowki while riding a scooter to Asuran Chowk.
He stated that they had been arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. Shukla has been fired, according to Inspector General (Gorakhpur range) J Ravindra Gaur.
Gaur asked Gorakhpur SSP Gaurav Grover to undertake an extensive probe into the situation. Meanwhile, Maharajganj SP Kaustubh suspended four policemen, including a sub-inspector and three head constables, for carelessness, indiscipline, and abuse of authority. The men were stationed in the SWAT (special weapons and tactics) unit and assisted Shukla in conducting the racket, the officer alleged during his questioning.
SWAT team sub-inspector Bipendra Mall, as well as head constables Ashutosh Kumar Singh, Krishna Kumar Singh, and Vidyasagar, have all been suspended. According to the SP, a departmental investigation has been launched against them.
