New Delhi, February 18: Property confiscated from those protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Uttar Pradesh will be returned for the time being.
Last week, the Supreme Court had called the recovery notice issued in 2019 against its earlier decisions. Today the UP government told the Supreme Court that it has withdrawn the old notices. Now the process will be started again on the basis of the new law.
Petitioner Pervez Arif Titu has said that notices for compensation are being sent for the purpose of harassing the minorities in UP. It has been said in the petition that according to the earlier judgment of the Supreme Court, the order for assessment and compensation of damages in such cases should have come from the High Court or any judicial body, but the district administration in UP has sent notices to the people.
It has been said in the petition that these notices are also illegal because there is no law regarding it in UP.
On January 31 2020, the court had issued a notice to the UP government. The court did not stay the action.
