Hamirpur, 29 Dec: The wife of a Naib Tehsildar has filed a police complaint against him, stating that he converted to Islam in order to marry a Muslim woman.
According to the complaint, Ashish Gupta, a Naib Tehsildar from Uttar Pradesh’s Maudaha in Hamirpur district, reportedly changed his identity to Mohammad Yusuf. Gupta, who purportedly converted to Islam, was dismissed from his office and sent to the collectorate after an initial investigation found him in violation of the employment code, according to sources.
ADM, Hamirpur Arun Mishra stated that the Naib Tehsildar was breaking service norms and that “he (Ashish Gupta) has been removed from his post and attached to the collectorate until further notice.”
He also stated that the government had received a report on his actions.
In the FIR filed by Gupta’s wife, Aarti, three other persons were mentioned. Uttar Pradesh Police detained all three suspects for aiding religious conversion.
Police are also conducting raids in several locations to find down the Muslim woman with whom Gupta is supposedly involved.
According to numerous media accounts, the event occurred in September of this year, when Gupta took over as Naib Tehsildar in Maudaha. After mosque caretaker Mohammad Mushtaq claimed that a non-Muslim called Mohammad Yusuf was coming to pray, a scandal ensued.
Following a complaint from the mosque’s caretaker, the government launched an investigation against Gupta. His wife later claimed that he was compelled to convert in order to marry a Muslim woman.
Meanwhile, Hamirpur SP Diksha Sharma stated that an inquiry into Gupta’s wife’s accusations was continuing.
