Varanasi, 4 Nov: According to police, an FIR has been filed against Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai on a complaint from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) for allegedly fostering animosity.

Meanwhile, Rai has accused members of the ABVP of being engaged in an alleged instance of molestation on the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus, according to a police complaint filed by an ABVP office-bearer.

According to Inspector (crime) Sahjanand Srivastav, a FIR was filed against the Congress politician at the Lanka police station here on Friday night under section 505(2) (statements fostering or encouraging enmity, animosity, or ill-will between classes) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Rai regarded the accusation against him as an indication of concern on the side of the ABVP, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s (RSS) students’ wing. “This demonstrates their nervousness. A thorough investigation into the situation will show who is responsible for the molestation event. The BHU has turned into a haven for ABVP (members) who harbor outsiders,” he stated.

The alleged abuse took place on Wednesday night. The complainant stated that she had left her hostel with a companion when three males on a motorbike forcibly dragged her to a corner and gagged her after separating her from her friend near the Karman Baba shrine.

The accused then reportedly undressed the victim, filmed and photographed her.

According to the complaint, they let her go after approximately 15 minutes and forced her to reveal her phone number. An FIR has been launched at the Lanka police station on the basis of the woman’s allegation under section 354 of the IPC (assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to insult her modesty) and the provisions of the Information Technology Act.

The police have yet to make an arrest in the case.
