Lucknow, 11 Aug: The steady growth in the number of cancer cases across India continued in 2022, with Uttar Pradesh leading the list with 2.10 lakh new cases, up from 2.01 lakh in 2020.
The increase in cancer mortality corresponds with the cases, according to data from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
In 2022, 8,08,558 people died, representing a mortality rate of more than 55% of all cases recorded in India. UP again topped the list with 1,16,818 fatalities. The mortality rate in UP was the same as the national average, with Maharashtra coming in second.
The information was obtained from the Indian Council of Medical Research Cancer Registry, according to health officials.
Cancer is only a notifiable condition in 15 states, thus experts feel the figures were an understatement of the true trend. And this list excludes Uttar Pradesh, which has the highest number of cases and deaths.
Officials stated that the union government has taken many initiatives to assist cancer sufferers in gaining access to health services. For the poor and needy, care at government facilities is either free or heavily subsidised, and cancer treatment is also offered under Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY).
According to UP health officials, quality generic medications are made available to people at affordable costs through the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) in conjunction with state governments.
Affordable Medicines and Reliable Implants for Treatment (AMRIT) pharmacy outlets have been established in several hospitals/institutions with the goal of making cancer treatments available at a significant discount compared to the maximum retail price.
