Kanpur, 20 December: Due to the Western Disturbance over the Himalayas, snow is falling on the mountains resulting in the movement of Northwesterly winds or snowy winds are coming in the plains.

Along with this, due to the effect of La Nina rising in the Pacific Ocean, the chilly winds are making people feel thawed.

The Meteorological Department says that the outbreak of cold wave will continue to increase in the coming days. Although there will be some drop in the temperature after two days, but people will not be able to get any relief from the cold wave.

Dr SN Sunil Pandey, Meteorologist of Chandrashekhar Azad University of Agricultural Technology apprised on Monday that this year the effect of La Nina is being seen in the Pacific Ocean. Winter winds are blowing faster due to the influence of La Nina. Along with this, Western Disturbance is also active in the Himalayas, due to which the icy winds are intensifying the cold winds with the effect of La Nina. Due to this, the cold wave is troubling the people along with melting in the plains.

The meteorologist said that according to the IMD, cold winds from the northwest will continue for the next 2-3 days. The temperature in western districts will further drop or it may remain in similar range. The temperature of entire Uttar Pradesh including Kanpur along with eastern districts is likely to fall in the next 48 hours and rise gradually thereafter.

β€œA fresh Western Disturbance is expected to approach the Western Himalayas by 22nd December and the winds will change direction. Cool north-east and north-westerly winds will be replaced by relatively warm and humid south-westerly winds and south-easterly winds,” he added.

He further said, parts of Uttar Pradesh may remain partly cloudy which may help in raising the night temperature. Despite the rise in temperature, cold wave conditions will prevail in many parts of the state including Kanpur.

This is the effect of La Nina

The meteorologist said that the ‘La Nina’ effect that arose in the Pacific Ocean this year is rising the winter not only in India, but in all the surrounding countries. The La Nina effect is visible once a year. In this, the sea water cools rapidly, due to which the winter increases in South Asia. Due to this effect, clouds cover the sky and it also rains. Due to La Nina, the winter season may last this year.

It is worth mentioning that La Nina refers to a large-scale cooling of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. In a year with La Nia effect, the wind blows faster during the winter season. The waters near and near the equator tend to be cooler than normal.

Winter has started and the temperature continues to drop. The minimum temperature on Monday dropped by 0.4 degrees to 7 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature fell by 1.5 degree Celsius to 20.4 degree Celsius. The relative humidity in the morning was recorded at 86 per cent and in the afternoon at 42 per cent. In such a situation, due to the cold wind coming from the mountains, people were suffering due to cold wave and melting in the evening.

Meanwhile, the temperature is expected to drop further till December 22.

He told that there is no chance of rain this week due to clear sky at block and district level of central Uttar Pradesh. And this week the outbreak of cold wave will continue, so farmers are advised to maintain proper moisture in potato and vegetable crops by doing light irrigation.
