Kolkata, June 15: The Calcutta High Court made it clear in its direction on Thursday night that central forces will have to be deployed within 48 hours for security and the restoration of law and order ahead of the panchayat elections in West Bengal.
After the tough stand of the High Court, the stir at the State Election Commission has intensified.
Today, the commission can write a letter to the central government in this regard. In this regard, a request will be made for the deployment of paramilitary forces by Saturday.
The court has made it clear that the cost of the deployment of central forces will be borne by the central government and not the state government. Usually, the state in which the central forces are deployed at the time of elections bears the expenses of the central forces.
Commission sources have told me that the application process has started. The state government is also being consulted. If necessary, this decision of the High Court can be challenged in the Supreme Court.
The High Court has made it clear that if the Commission wants to go to the Supreme Court but our decision is not implemented, then the High Court will not remain silent.
Legal experts believe that in view of the manner in which three people were killed during the six-day nomination process in the state and incidents of bombings, shootings, and assaults have come to light across the state, the orders of the Supreme Court and the High Court will not interfere.
