New Delhi, September 19: The Nari Shakti Vandan Bill, 2023, i.e., the Women’s Reservation Bill, was introduced in the Lok Sabha on the first day of the new Parliament. Even before the introduction of the bill, the Prime Minister urged all parties to cooperate in passing the bill unanimously.
The bill was introduced by union Minister of State for Law and Justice (Independent Charge) Arjun Ram Meghwal. This will be the 128th Amendment Bill of the Constitution. Under this, changes will be made to Articles 330A, 332, and 334A of the Constitution. If the bill is passed, 33 percent of reservations will be given to women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
Meghwal said that after the bill becomes an act, the number of women MPs in the Lok Sabha will be at least 181. At present, there are 82 women MPs in the Lok Sabha.
He said that attempts were made to bring the Women’s Reservation Bill earlier also, but under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, the Women’s Reservation Bill has been brought once again. In the bill, changes will be made to the provisions related to reservation in the national capital, Delhi, the Lok Sabha, and the state assembly through constitutional amendment. Also, it will be for 15 years, the period of which can be extended further.
While introducing the bill, the issue of not receiving a copy of the bill was raised by the opposition MPs. The Speaker asked the members to view a copy of the bill on their digital monitors. The Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs said that the revised agenda had also been sent to all the members.
During this, Trinamool Congress MP raised the issue of women’s reservation in Rajya Sabha. At the same time, the opposition members raised noise on the issue of not handling the procedure related to the introduction of the bill properly.
The bill was allowed to be introduced by voice vote, but the opposition did not raise its voice in its favor. After presenting the bill, the proceedings of the House were adjourned for the day.
