
Jhanvi Kapoor’s role sparks outcry, ‘Peddi’ makers respond with apology
Ram Charan and Jhanvi Kapoor starrer “Peddi” has been embroiled in controversy since its release. A section of viewers alleged that Jhanvi Kapoor’s character was unnecessarily sexualized in the film. Amid growing criticism on social media, the film’s director, Buchi Babu Sana, has publicly apologized for the incident.
In a statement shared on X on Saturday, the director stated that the purpose of cinema is to entertain and inspire, not to make anyone feel uncomfortable or humiliated. He acknowledged that the audience’s objections to certain scenes in the film have been taken seriously.
The director stated that he never intended to portray any female character in a negative light and apologizes profusely to anyone who felt that way.
Buchi Babu Sana also announced that some of the film’s controversial scenes will be altered. He said that with time, the sensibilities and expectations of the audience change, hence the responsibility of the filmmakers also increases. Ram Charan is playing the role of a sports star and community leader in ‘Peddi’, which released on June 4. Jhanvi Kapoor, Boman Irani, Shiva Rajkumar, Jagapathi Babu and Divyanshu are also seen in important roles in the film.
On its third day at the box office, Ram Charan’s sports drama Peddi collected around ₹28.75 crore on Saturday, June 6, taking its total domestic gross to approximately ₹127.74 crore and crossing the ₹100 crore mark in India, while continuing to enjoy strong weekend momentum with high occupancy across major cities.
