New Delhi, July 20: In a significant step toward dengue prevention, India’s drug regulator, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), has approved the use of the country’s first dengue vaccine, ‘Qudenga.’ Developed by Japanese pharmaceutical company Takeda, this vaccine is the first approved for dengue prevention in India.
Following CDSCO approval, this vaccine will be available to people aged 4 to 60 years. Significantly, there is no need to test for a history of dengue before vaccination. This vaccine has been developed to provide protection against all four major serotypes of the dengue virus.
According to the company’s clinical trials, the vaccine was approximately 80 percent effective against confirmed dengue cases up to one year after the second dose. At the same time, the risk of hospitalization in severe dengue cases was also significantly reduced.
Health experts believe that the approval of this vaccine will give new impetus to dengue prevention efforts in India. However, they have also clarified that along with the vaccine, measures like mosquito prevention, cleanliness and prevention of waterlogging will remain equally important for dengue control.
