Afghan national arrested at Varanasi airport for using fake Indian passport

Varanasi, July 20: An Afghan national was arrested with a fake Indian passport during immigration check at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Babatpur, Varanasi on Monday. Investigation revealed that he was living in India under the name of “Rehman Shah” by hiding his real identity and was trying to go abroad under the same name.

DCP Gomti Zone office said on Monday that during the departure immigration check of Air India Express flight number IX- 183 (Varanasi-Sharjah), Bureau of Immigration officials intercepted a suspicious passenger travelling on Indian passport number Y 8558322. After verification of documents and questioning, his real identity was revealed as Abdul Rehman Taraki, a resident of Afghanistan.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused had entered India on January 6, 2019, on an Afghan passport number P 0158154 and a medical attendant visa (number VL 1393047). His visa expired on April 5, 2019, but he had been illegally staying in India beyond the stipulated period.

According to the DCP Gomti Zone office, to remain in India, he allegedly fraudulently obtained an Indian passport from the Regional Passport Office (RPO) in Mumbai by changing his name, date of birth, and parental details. He was attempting to travel to Sharjah using this passport. After necessary questioning, the Bureau of Immigration handed him over to the Phulpur police station with a written complaint. Based on the complaint, the police have registered a case under relevant sections.

During interrogation at Phulpur police station, the accused revealed his real name as Abdul Rahman Taraki and his father’s name as Abdul Aziz. He admitted that he is a resident of Ghazni province, Afghanistan, and had come to India on a medical attendant visa. After his visa expired, he allegedly obtained an Indian passport using forged documents. The accused has been presented in court and further legal action is underway. A thorough investigation is also being conducted into the role of others involved in preparing the forged documents, obtaining the Indian passport, and assisting in the entire conspiracy.
