West Bengal gets its first NIA police station, operations begin in New Town
Kolkata, July 30: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has established its own police station in West Bengal. Following approval from the state cabinet, a notification was issued by Nabanna on Thursday announcing the establishment of the state’s first NIA police station.
The NIA station has been established on the 16th floor of the NBCC building in New Town. Now, FIRs for all NIA cases related to West Bengal will be registered at this police station. Previously, the NIA had to rely on its headquarters in Delhi to register FIRs in cases within the state.
The NIA had long been planning to establish its own police station in Kolkata. However, it is alleged that this plan could not be implemented due to alleged non-cooperation from the state government during the tenure of the previous Trinamool Congress government. Within about three months of the transition of power, Suvendu Adhikari’s cabinet approved a proposal to establish an NIA police station in the state.
In addition to major cities like Mumbai and Chennai, the NIA also has its own police stations in Ranchi, Kochi, and Imphal. Such police stations are established in various cities to facilitate investigations and expedite local action.
In West Bengal, the NIA began its investigation with the 2014 Khagragarh blast case. After nearly 12 years, the agency has now established its own police station in the state.
It is reported that the proposal to establish an NIA police station was approved at a state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on July 22. Prior to this, during Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to West Bengal, a meeting was held with the Chief Minister regarding law and order and security in the state. Following this, the establishment of the NIA police station is considered a significant administrative and security step.
