Absconding since 2005, fraud accused nabbed in Mumbai
Mumbai, August 03: The Mumbai police has arrested businessman Avdhut Chafekar (65), an accused in a fraud case of ₹ 9 lakh💰. Avdhoot Chafekar was absconding for the last 21 years in a fraud case of 2005.
Nashik businessman Avdhut Chafekar (65), who was evading arrest, was nabbed from a hotel in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) when he had come to Mumbai to complete the process of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list.
The Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Sanjay Gaikwad said on Monday that a court had issued an arrest warrant against Chafekar in the year 2005. Despite this, he continued to evade the police. The investigation revealed that he did not use the mobile phone registered in his name and concealed his identity by using other people’s identity cards. During this time, he settled in Nashik and started an electrical manufacturing business.
During the search for the accused, police contacted officials involved in the SIR process and requested immediate information if Chapekar came to verify his voter records. As soon as he arrived in Mumbai to verify his voter records and submitted his documents and information to the officials, the officials provided the contact number listed in the application to the police.
Although the number was registered in someone else’s name, police were able to locate him through technical investigation and arrested him at a hotel in Bandra Kurla Complex. Further legal proceedings are underway in this case.
