Weather department predicts prolonged downpour in UP
Lucknow, September 25: The weather in Uttar Pradesh has suddenly changed, with heavy rain expected to continue for the next three days. Intermittent showers since Thursday prompted the Meteorological Department to issue a Friday evening alert forecasting intense rainfall across several districts for the next 48 hours.
Monsoon activity has once again increased across Uttar Pradesh. The Regional Meteorological Center, Lucknow, has issued an effective rain forecast for September 25th to 29th. According to this, heavy rainfall is possible in many parts of the state between September 25 and 27. Heavy rainfall is also possible in some districts. Along with the rain, there will be the risk of strong winds, thunderstorms, and lightning.
According to the Met forecast, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Siddharthnagar, Gonda, Balrampur, Shravasti, and Bahraich on September 26. Several districts, including Banda, Chitrakoot, Kaushambi, Prayagraj, Fatehpur, Pratapgarh, Sant Kabir Nagar, Basti, Maharajganj, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Barabanki, Rae Bareli, Amethi, Sultanpur, Ayodhya, and Ambedkar Nagar, are also likely to experience heavy rainfall.
In eastern Uttar Pradesh, heavy rainfall is also expected in Sonbhadra, Mirzapur, Chandauli, Varanasi, Bhadohi, Jaunpur, Ghazipur, Ballia, Deoria, Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, as well as Hardoi, Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, Unnao, Lucknow, Bareilly, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Jalaun, Hamirpur, Mahoba, Jhansi, and Lalitpur.
Heavy rain is likely in Shravasti, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Shahjahanpur, Sambhal, Bareilly, Pilibhit, Rampur, Amroha, Moradabad, Badaun and surrounding areas. Apart from this, gusty winds with a speed of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour can blow in many districts including Deoria, Gorakhpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Basti, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Siddharthnagar, Gonda, Balrampur, Shravasti, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Hardoi, Barabanki, Lucknow, Rae Bareli, Amethi, Sultanpur and Ayodhya.
The weatherman has also issued a flash flood warning till 1:30 pm on 26th September. Flash floods are likely to occur in several districts, including Azamgarh, Ballia, Ghazipur, Mau, Maharajganj, Kushinagar, Gorakhpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Siddharthnagar, Basti, Balrampur, Ambedkarnagar, Pratapgarh, Sultanpur, Ayodhya, Gonda, Shravasti, Sitapur, Bahraich, Hardoi, Lucknow, Raebareli, Amethi, Fatehpur, Kanpur Nagar, Banda, and Kaushambi.
The Met authority has predicted waterlogging in low-lying areas, damage to mud houses and weak structures, falling of trees and electric poles, and disruption of road and rail traffic during heavy rains. There is also a possibility of increased water levels in rivers and streams and flooding of fields during heavy rains.
According to Dr S.N. Sunil Pandey, senior meteorologist at Chandrashekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, Kanpur, a change in weather has occurred before the monsoon’s departure due to ample atmospheric moisture and a localized cyclonic circulation. This has created favorable conditions for thunderstorms and rain in the central, eastern, and Terai districts. He advised farmers to avoid open fields, tall trees, and near power poles during inclement weather, and to store harvested crops in a safe place.
The Meteorological Department has advised farmers to maintain proper drainage in their fields and to support their crops during strong winds and rain. Crops such as paddy, sugarcane, pigeon pea, maize, peanuts, sesame, black gram, soybean, rapeseed, vegetables, mango, banana, and papaya may be affected by heavy rain and wind. There is also a risk of tree branches breaking and fruit falling in horticultural crops.
According to the Meteorological Department, rain is likely to persist in some areas on September 28 and 29. However, there are signs that the warning will gradually subside. Currently, the greatest caution is advised between September 25th and 27th.
