AAP faces major jolt in Punjab as two sitting MLAs quit party
Chandigarh, November 01: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has suffered a major setback ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Punjab as on Sunday, a day after the first list of candidates was released, two sitting MLAs, Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra (Sanaur) and Chetan Singh Jodmajra (Samana), resigned from the party.
This is being linked to the fear of losing their tickets in the assembly elections. It is believed that the AAP was not in favor of fielding these two MLAs again. The party had recently indicated this by appointing new constituency in-charges in both assembly constituencies.
The party had appointed Ranjodh Hadana as the constituency in-charge in the Sanaur assembly constituency, while Surjit Singh Rakhra was appointed the constituency in-charge in Samana. Following these appointments, discussions regarding a change in the party’s election strategy for both seats intensified.
It’s worth noting that Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra has been embroiled in controversy since a rape case was filed against him. Reports of his absconding after the case was filed also raised questions about his political standing. Now, the resignations of both MLAs are likely to create new equations in Punjab politics.
