Prayagraj, 17 Aug: Two wanted criminals were injured and arrested after exchange of fire with police near Nohri Ka Purwa village in Uttar Pradesh’s Kaushambi district’s Charwa police station. Dilip (22) and Maan Singh (20), residents of Rampur and Pipri villages, respectively, were admitted to the district hospital in Manjhanpur for treatment.

According to police, both offenders were involved in an acid throwing incident on a female manager on August 8 near Chilla Shahbazi, within the jurisdiction of the Charwa police station in the Kaushambi district. The incident occurred while she was on her way to her regular duties. The lady worked at the Bank of Baroda’s Saiyed Sarawan branch. She was receiving treatment at a hospital.

“Acting on a tip-off that two men who allegedly threw acid on a woman bank manager of a nationalised bank were moving between Nohri Ka Purwa and Gungwa garden road, a joint team of Charwa police and special operation group (SOG) of Kaushambi police intercepted their bike near Naohri Ka Purwa village and asked them to surrender,” IG (Prayagraj range) Dr Rakesh Singh said.

The criminals opened fire on the police party, in retaliation police also fired, injuring both of them. Following that, the police recovered two 0.315 bore country-made pistols, two live cartridges, and a bike on the spot.

Meanwhile, the IG claimed that at least nine people, including an ex-gram Pradhan, were involved in the plot to throw acid on the manager. He also claimed that police were looking for all seven fugitives.

Meanwhile, police said that investigations into the acid attack incident revealed the work of a racket allegedly involved in seeking loans on false documents, and that these racketeers saw the victim (woman bank manager) as an impediment to their nefarious activities. The criminals had used low intensity acid (typically used in tattoo design) with the intent of threatening the female bank manager.
