New Delhi, 28 October: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday that the work of bringing the culprits of the 26/11 attack to justice is still incomplete. Without naming China and Pakistan, the foreign minister said those guilty of this heinous crime against humanity are still under protection and have not received any punishment.
The Special Meeting of the Counter-Terrorism Committee of the United Nations Security Council was held in Mumbai today. On the first day of the two-day meeting at the Taj Hotel, in Mumbai, ambassadors of all fifteen UN Security Council member countries paid tributes at the memorial for those killed in the terror attack.
During this, the External Affairs Minister delivered the Inaugural Briefing on Combating the Financing of Terrorism in Local and Regional Contexts. He said that November next month marks the 14th anniversary of the horrific attacks on Mumbai in 2008. One terrorist was caught alive, put on trial, and convicted by the Supreme Court of India in this attack. But the key conspirators and planners of the 26/11 attacks are still under protection and have not been punished.
Without naming China, the foreign minister said that when it comes to banning some of these terrorists, regrettably the Security Council has been unable to act in some cases for political reasons. It undermines our collective credibility and our collective interests.
The External Affairs Minister said that terrorist organizations require money and resources to maintain their organizational functions and carry out activities. In such a situation, terrorism is flourishing because it is getting the necessary financial resources. The External Affairs Minister gave a five-point policy in this regard.
He said that terrorism is a serious threat to international peace and security and indeed to the whole of humanity. The loss to the victims of terror is immeasurable and can never be compensated. However, it is up to us as responsible members of the international community to remember their trauma and continue in our efforts to bring perpetrators of terrorism to justice. We are indebted to every victim of terrorism around the world.
External Affairs Minister Dr Jaishankar paid tributes at the 26/11 memorial site along with senior UN Security Council member countries and UN officials. After that, a minute’s silence was observed. The next day’s meeting will be held in the capital Delhi in which Chinese diplomats will also participate.
