UP Board affiliation now comes with 18% GST tag

Prayagraj, August 22: The Schools recognized and affiliated with the Uttar Pradesh Board of Secondary Education, as well as institutions applying for new recognition, will now be required to pay 18% Goods and Services Tax (GST) on recognition fees.

The Board of Secondary Education has clarified that this arrangement will apply to applications for new recognition or affiliation made on the online portal from April 1, 2026. This information was provided by the Board’s Secretary, Bhagwati Singh, on Saturday.

He stated that 18% GST is payable on recognition and affiliation fees under the directives issued by the Revenue Department of the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, and the provisions of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act. He stated that this arrangement has been implemented with immediate effect in the Board’s recognition process to ensure transparency and compliance with regulations.

According to the Secretary, from April 1, 2026, institutions that have applied or are applying for new recognition or affiliation will be required to deposit 18% GST in addition to the prescribed recognition fee. The recognition process will only proceed after the GST is deposited.

He added that all future applications for recognition will also require a mandatory payment of 18% GST on the prescribed recognition fee. Applications received without GST payment will not be considered and will not be forwarded or recommended. The Council has also clarified that after the recognition fee is paid, a separate 18% GST must be deposited into a designated account. After depositing the GST amount, a certified copy of the receipt or challan must be uploaded to the portal at the time of online application. A copy must also be made available to the relevant regional office.

Bhagwati Singh, Secretary of the Secondary Education Council, has directed all District School Inspectors in the state to immediately inform the managers, principals, and applicants seeking new recognition of this arrangement in their respective districts. He has asked to ensure strict compliance with the instructions. The Council has also issued instructions to regional offices and relevant officials to ensure effective implementation of the new GST system in the recognition and affiliation process.
