Lucknow/Kanpur, August 22: The Kanpur police has arrested CA Mohammad Irfan, who was wanted since 2024, from Lucknow in connection with an alleged fraud of more than 2.20 crore rupees by misusing his GST registration on the pretext of closing a firm. A reward of 10 thousand rupees was announced on him.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police, East, Satyajeet Gupta said on Saturday that Mohammad Irfan had been wanted in the case since 2024. He was constantly changing locations to avoid arrest. Police and surveillance teams were engaged in his search. Based on a tip-off, he was arrested on August 21 from Afsan Apartment in the Gudamba police station area of Lucknow.
In the case, Mohammad Suleman, a resident of Sujatganj, had filed a complaint stating that he had started a readymade garment manufacturing firm on July 18. After his business began incurring losses, he entrusted the closure of the firm to his CA, Mohammad Irfan. He then left for Saudi Arabia on November 12, 2019. The CA informed him of the firm‘s closure. Suleman learned that the firm had not been closed when he received a notice from the GST department in April 2024. The GST department revealed that the firm’s GST number was misused in the financial years 2019-20 and 2020-21, allegedly resulting in fraudulent billing totaling ₹2,20,75,800.
According to the complaint, fake bills were generated in the names of various firms for work other than readymade garments, including leather finishing. No payments were made to Suleman’s firm or bank account. A case was registered at the Rail Bazar police station in this matter. According to the police, a reward of ₹10,000 was announced on the accused on February 27, 2026. After his arrest, he is being produced in court.
