Critics divided, audiences disappointed, yet ‘Toxic’ box office booms
Kannada superstar Yash’s much-awaited film ‘Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-ups’ has made a great start at the box office upon its release. Directed by Geetu Mohandas, this action-thriller crossed the 100 crore mark on the very first day. The special thing is that the film has received mixed response from critics and audiences. Many audiences expressed disappointment with the story, screenplay and direction, but this did not affect the earnings of the film.
According to preliminary figures from SACNILC, ‘Toxic’ collected a net collection of 101.10 crores on the first day. The film benefited the most from the Hindi belt, where it earned 55 crores. It grossed ₹23.30 crore in Kannada, ₹16 crore in Telugu, ₹5.50 crore in Tamil, and ₹1.30 crore in Malayalam. The film grossed ₹120.75 crore on its first day with 24,579 shows, while its worldwide collection is reported to be ₹140.75 crore.
With this impressive opening, “Toxic” surpassed the opening day collections of films like “Pathan” (₹57 crore), “Jawaan” (₹75 crore), “Animal” (₹63.80 crore), and “Kalki 2898 AD” (₹95.30 crore). However, Yash missed out on breaking his own film “KGF: Chapter 2’s” opening record of ₹116 crore. The film also narrowly missed Ranveer Singh’s “Dhurandhar 2″‘s record of ₹102.55 crore. The film stars Yash alongside Kiara Advani, Nayanthara, Tara Sutaria and Rukmini Vasanth in pivotal roles.
