Yogi govt cracks down on over-speeding, ₹1.38 crore fine imposed

Lucknow, October 29: Under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s leadership, the Uttar Pradesh government is intensifying efforts to enhance road safety and reduce fatalities from road accidents, with the Traffic Directorate of Uttar Pradesh Police conducting a statewide special inspection drive, ‘Operation Safe Speed,’ on all expressways, during which 6,777 vehicles were challaned in two phases and fines totaling ₹1.38 crore were imposed against speed limit violators to promote safer driving and traffic awareness.

This campaign, being run through the Traffic Directorate on the initiative of UP DGP Rajiv Krishna, was conducted under the direction of Additional Director General of Police (Traffic) A. Satish Ganesh. Vehicles moving at high speeds were monitored using interceptor vehicles on major expressways and identified locations across the state. Action was taken against those violating the prescribed speed limit as per the rules.

The special campaign, ‘Operation Safe Speed’, was conducted in two phases

The first phase on October 26 and the second on October 28, 2026. In both phases, special checks were conducted simultaneously on the state’s expressways. During this period, the Yamuna Expressway received the highest number of challans (3,116) and a fine of Rs 66.98 lakh was imposed.

On the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, 1,289 challans were issued, amounting to a fine of Rs 24.18 lakh, on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway, 537 challans were issued, amounting to a fine of Rs 11.82 lakh 500, and on the Ganga Expressway, 553 challans were issued, amounting to a fine of Rs 9.40 lakh.

90 challans totaling ₹188,000 were issued on the Gorakhpur-Purvanchal Link Expressway, and 30 challans totaling ₹60,000 were issued on the Kanpur-Varanasi Highway. According to the Traffic Directorate, speeding is a major cause of road accidents. Speeding increases the risk of serious or fatal accidents. Therefore, the campaign aims not only to issue challans, but also to inculcate the habit of adhering to traffic rules and driving safely among drivers.

Efforts are being made to make traffic safer by monitoring all expressways in the state through interceptor vehicles and taking action against traffic violators. This initiative by the government and police is communicating the message to drivers to adhere to the prescribed speed limit.

Emphasis is placed on awareness for safe travel.

Under the campaign, the emphasis of the police is that the drivers should take care of the safety of other people walking on the road along with their own safety. Following the prescribed speed limit is not only a legal obligation but also a responsibility to save lives.
