New Delhi, August 3: Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in Parliament on Wednesday that the opposition, including the Congress, should not oppose the Bill on appointments and transfers related to Delhi just for the sake of alliance. They should see what is in the interest of Delhi and the country.
He said that the bill will be passed, but the party for which it is opposed is not going to remain in the alliance.
The Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023, was introduced in the Lok Sabha.
Initiating the discussion on the Bill, the Home Minister said that Delhi is a union Territory and Parliament has the right to bring Bills. The Supreme Court has also confirmed this in its decision.
Keeping the history of Delhi in mind, Shah said that there have been rival governments at the Centre and in the states in the past, but there has never been a deadlock. It started in 2015. The aim of the party that is in power in Delhi is not to serve but to fight.
Shah termed the opposition to the bill as political and said that the matter is not only related to appointments and transfers. Actually, to hide the rigging in the construction of the Chief Minister’s house, it is related to taking over the vigilance.
The Home Minister said that joint opposition to the bill is being done only to form an alliance, whereas any bill should be opposed keeping in mind the interests of Delhi and the country.
He said that even if a coalition is formed, under the leadership of Narendra Modi, once again a government with a full majority will be formed.
During the discussion, the Home Minister also mentioned Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Dr. Ambedkar. He said that after independence, the Pattabhi Sitaramaiya Committee had recommended giving statehood to Delhi.
However, when this recommendation came before the Constituent Assembly, it was opposed by leaders like Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Rajaji, Rajendra Prasad, and Dr. Ambedkar.
