BJP women’s wing presses NCW over JNU harassment allegations
New Delhi, October 14: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded action against Congress MP and former JNU professor Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam in connection with complaints of alleged misconduct and sexual harassment from 11 students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The BJP has submitted a letter to National Commission for Women Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar in this regard.
BJP Mahila Morcha National President Roop Kumari Chaudhary said on Wednesday that she, along with five women MPs and Mahila Morcha officials, met with the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women. The delegation urged the Commission to take cognizance of the matter and take necessary action based on the students’ complaints.
Chaudhary said that the 11 JNU students had courageously filed written complaints against Dr. Bimol Akoijam. According to her, the university’s internal committee, after an investigation, found the complaints to be true, and the professor in question was dismissed from the university.
The BJP Mahila Morcha president stated that the students’ complaints and the university’s internal committee’s investigation findings should be taken seriously. She appealed to the National Commission for Women to intervene and take appropriate action.
Chaudhary also questioned the response of the Congress party and its leaders to the matter. She stated that despite the fact that this case involving a former university professor and current Congress MP has come to light, Congress leaders have remained silent.
The BJP demanded that the students’ complaints be taken seriously and appropriate action be taken. The party urged the National Commission for Women to take cognizance of the matter within its jurisdiction and take necessary action.
