Imran Khan challenges ‘Leave India Notice’ in Bombay High Court
Film actor and US citizen Imran Khan on Saturday challenged in the Bombay High Court the ‘Leave India Notice’ (LIN) issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) directing him to leave India by October 28. The actor has called the notice unconstitutional and sought its cancellation.
Imran Khan’s lawyer told the media on Saturday that a writ petition was filed on his client’s behalf in the High Court. The notice was issued on October 14 and alleges that the actor violated the Immigration and Foreigners Act (IFA) by participating in a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyan Kumar near the August Kranti Maidan on October 10. The FRRO had also issued a show-cause notice to Imran Khan in the same matter. It states that based on his explanation and review of the relevant documents, his Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) registration may be cancelled under Section 7D(e) of the Citizenship Act, 1955.
The 44-year-old actor has requested the court to immediately stay the implementation of the Leave India Notice until a final decision is taken on his petition. The petition seeks interim relief and appeals to restrain the authorities from taking any coercive action against him, including a stay on steps such as deportation and issuance of a Look Out Circular (LOC).
