On Rajiv Gandhi’s birth anniversary, Rahul Gandhi slams govt over betrayal of ‘Swaraj’ ideals
New Delhi, August 20: On Rajiv Gandhi’s 82nd birth anniversary, former Congress President and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, speaking on youth, the education system, and democratic rights, said that today the ideological battle in the country is based on the fact that a group has decided that they alone know the truth for the entire country. This is why students are attacked every day.
Speaking at the “Hara- Bhara Swaraj”: A Tribute to Rajiv Gandhi’s Vision” program held at the New Jawahar Bhawan here on the 82nd birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi said that if a student comes to him, he believes that the student knows their own truth better. His job is to listen, respect, and understand. He said that this is the real political battle.
He said that Swaraj is often confused with freedom, whereas Swaraj means “rule over oneself.” This is a responsibility, a way of thinking. Gandhiji wanted everyone to follow this path. The government and the country’s job is to open the doors to the imagination of young people and help them follow that path.
Rahul Gandhi said that Gandhiji’s vision cannot be realized as long as the education system remains expensive, the examination system unfair, the financial system remains concentrated in the hands of a few, and the political system does not reach every corner of the country. A poor environment distances a person from Swaraj and alters their natural state.
Rahul Gandhi said that the country needs change so that every person, regardless of their religion, caste, age, or gender, can feel that they belong here, that they are loved and respected here, and that their search for truth matters.
