Taslima Nasrin arrives in Kolkata, says “I am feeling very good”
Kolkata, July 31: Famous Bangladeshi-origin writer Taslima Nasrin returned to Kolkata on Friday after nearly 19 years, landing at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Dum Dum at 12:50 pm, where she was welcomed with conch sounds and ululation, and dressed in a white-red bordered saree she expressed joy on touching Kolkata soil, saying, “I am feeling very good.”
A few hours before leaving for Kolkata, Taslima shared a post on the social media platform X, writing, “Started my journey towards Kolkata this morning.” A few hours later, she arrived in Kolkata.
On Saturday, she is scheduled to attend an event at Rabindra Sadan. This is a literary conference against fundamentalism, organized by the Secular Mission and HRBFF. According to the organizers, state Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari may also attend the event.
In 2007, Taslima Nasreen faced controversy over her novel “Dwikhondito” (meaning “Split in Two”). The book’s publication led to protests and violence in some areas of Kolkata. At that time, the state was under a Left Front government, and during the tenure of then-Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, Taslima was forced to leave Kolkata. After this, she was unable to return to the city for a long time.
Her return after nearly 19 years has become a topic of discussion in literary and cultural circles. Her address at Saturday’s event will also be closely watched.
