Troubles mount for Samajwadi Party’s Azam Khan as ED intensifies action

Lucknow, August 19: Troubles continue for Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan as the Enforcement Directorate’s Lucknow Zonal Office on Wednesday raided 10 locations linked to him, with simultaneous searches spanning Rampur, Saharanpur, and Delhi.

According to preliminary information, this action is in connection with the ongoing investigation of the money laundering case related to Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust and Mohammad Ali Jauhar University, Rampur. The ED’s action is being carried out under Section 17 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. The investigation has revealed money transactions and other information between contractors and the trust. Investigating agencies are attempting to determine whether the funds received by the trust are legitimate and whether they were used for university purposes or elsewhere.

It is noteworthy that Azam Khan’s Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust is headquartered in Lucknow, with SP leader Azam Khan as its primary trustee. Besides him, several family members and associates are also members of the trust. This trust also operates the Mohammad Ali Jauhar University and a public school in Rampur district.

In July 2026, the Rampur Development Authority (RDA) issued an order to demolish 38 of the university’s 40 buildings. This order sparked considerable controversy and was later put on hold.
