Yogi honors brave police officers with gallantry medals, releases book by ex‑DGP

Lucknow, October 1: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday honored police officers who displayed indomitable courage, bravery, and dedication by awarding them gallantry medals. On this occasion, the Chief Minister also released the book “Sangharsh” by former Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Prakash Singh.

Addressing the flag-off ceremony of 87 interceptor vehicles and the medal award ceremony for police personnel, Chief Minister Yogi said that today the UP Police has become an identity. He said that contemplation while sitting in a closed chamber is a different matter. Comments can be made in a closed chamber, but we can contemplate comfortably only when there is an environment of security! No matter how high a person is, if they are removed from security, it doesn’t take long for them to become like a wet cat.

The theme of the UP Police is “Your Safety, Our Resolve.” Prakash Singh, who was honored by the Government of India with the Padma Shri as the country’s most respected police officer, released his book. “We were in college when the Terai belt was gripped by terrorism, and there was an atmosphere of fear and terror. Traffic would be shut down after sunset. At that time, he held the position of Director General of Police. Today, Uttar Pradesh and the Terai region are considered safe.”

Chief Minister Yogi said that the most important quality of a leader is the ability to make decisions in all circumstances. This is what yields results. This was evident at that time. Those who disliked peace and security were always plotting conspiracies. A police officer who served in five states, including UP, Assam, Nagaland, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir, shared his experiences in his book.

Yogi said that shortcuts were not taken. Whenever a person attempts to take a shortcut, it leads not to progress but to misery. It creates a crisis of identity for the individual. This is exactly what Uttar Pradesh faced. Before 2017, people would dismiss them as UP residents. We believe the police faced a challenge, because if the political leadership lacked the ability to make decisions and was itself crooked, how could it maintain law and order? This was the norm here: bowing down to the mafia. They surrendered to them. A parallel government operated. The police were helpless, and no steps were taken for police reform! Today, the circumstances in Uttar Pradesh have changed. The law rules here.

Earlier, paying tribute to the supreme sacrifice in police service, the Chief Minister honored Munesh Devi, the wife of martyred STF Inspector Sunil Kumar, by presenting her with cash and a shawl. Inspector Sunil Kumar displayed indomitable courage in killing four criminals in an encounter in the Jhinjhana area of Shamli on January 20, 2025. He attained martyrdom while performing his duty. It was also announced that he would be posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra on Independence Day 2026. 1. Devdutt Singh – Constable, Civil Police, STF 2. Rajan Kumar – Constable, Civil Police, STF 3.
