Delhi police halts opposition leaders’ march to EC HQ, Rahul Gandhi calls actions “treason”
New Delhi, October 6: The Delhi police on Tuesday stopped the march of opposition leaders and MPs from Parliament to the Election Commission headquarters against the Election Commission over allegations of vote theft.
The Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, accused the central government and said that what has been done to the country is treason. Everyone will be investigated.
The march included more than 300 opposition MPs from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, including the Biju Janata Dal. After being stopped by the police, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and other opposition leaders staged a sit-in at the Akashvani Bhavan complex adjacent to the Election Commission headquarters.
Rahul Gandhi told reporters here that the opposition MPs were going to meet the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners, but the Delhi Police stopped them from proceeding further. Why were nearly 300 MPs, representing the voice of the country, prevented from meeting the Election Commissioners? When MPs are just 50 yards away from the Election Commission’s office and yet are not allowed to meet them, what is the meaning of democracy?
Rahul Gandhi alleged that the country’s democracy has been harmed through “vote theft,” and the entire country is aware of it. He said that even the policemen on duty told him that they are aware of the events taking place in the country.
He alleged that the central government has influenced the country’s democratic system with the help of Gyanesh Kumar. Whether it is Modi, Shah, Gyanesh Kumar, or anyone else, no one will be spared. Every person will be investigated and action will be taken against those responsible for the alleged “vote theft.” He called it a serious crime against the country and said that no one will be able to escape from it.
Earlier in March, Congress President and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, also accused the Election Commission and the central government. He said that those who taught Gyanesh Kumar about “vote theft” are the biggest thieves and that the opposition will continue its fight against them. The government is bent on destroying the Constitution, and now the people of the country feel that their votes are being taken away and their freedoms are being curtailed.
Kharge also questioned the Election Commission on the social media platform X, saying that the opposition has serious questions about the Election Commission’s functioning. The opposition will not allow democracy to be sold and will hold the Bharatiya Janata Party accountable.
