UP police nabs five criminals in encounter, weapons seized
Jaunpur, July, 7: In a late-night encounter on Monday, a joint team of Jalalpur and Kerakat police stations of the Jaunpur arrested five notorious criminals, with one injured and sent for treatment, while recovering eight pistols, a country-made revolver, cartridges, and two motorcycles from their possession.
The circle officer (CO) Kerakat Ajay Kumar Rai said on Tuesday that the operation was carried out under the leadership of Additional Superintendent of Police (City), Ayush Srivastava, as part of a campaign to apprehend criminals, based on the instructions of the Senior Superintendent of Police. Kerakat police were checking suspicious persons and vehicles near Tekuridih. Meanwhile, five suspects riding two motorcycles, upon seeing the police, began running towards Parauganj. Upon receiving the information, the Jalalpur police also cordoned off the area. Seeing police teams from both sides of the Thor Binde-Tekuri road, the accused opened fire on the police to save themselves.
He further apprised that the police retaliated in self-defense, in which Sonal Verma, son of Santosh Verma, resident of Birampur, Kerakat police station, was shot in the leg. After this, the police arrested all five accused. The arrested accused include Sonal Verma, son of Santosh Verma, resident of Birampur, Kerakat police station (injured); Rajeshwar Pandey, son of Nehru Pandey, resident of Ekouna, Gaurabadshahpur police station; Avnish Gupta, son of Vinod Gupta, resident of Birampur, Kerakat police station; Babi Kumar, son of Ramkumar, resident of Maksuda Mandi, Jalandhar (Punjab); Ranjeet Kumar, son of Ravi Kumar, resident of Ratan Nagar, Jalandhar (Punjab).
The police said that several cases including robbery, forgery, and the Gangster Act are already registered against Sonal Verma, while the criminal history of the other accused is being investigated. The police have registered a case against the accused under relevant sections and the Arms Act and have started further legal action.
