Monsoon active: IMD predicts rain, thunder across UP districts
Lucknow, 27 August: Monsoon activity continued across Uttar Pradesh on Thursday as the India Meteorological Department’s Lucknow Centre issued a district‑level immediate forecast predicting light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning in many districts including Prayagraj, while some areas were warned of moderate to heavy showers with thunder and lightning between 8:11 am and 11:11 am.
According to the forecast, light to moderate rain with thundershowers is likely over Prayagraj, Mirzapur, Sant Ravidas Nagar, Varanasi, Jaunpur, Pratapgarh, Chitrakoot, Banda, Kaushambi, Hamirpur, Fatehpur, Jalaun, Rae Bareli, Amethi, Kanpur Nagar, Lalitpur, Jhansi, Etawah, Agra, Firozabad, Mainpuri, Etah, Hathras, Mathura, Kasganj, Sultanpur, Ayodhya, Kanpur Dehat, Unnao, Auraiya, Lucknow, Barabanki, Kannauj, Hardoi, Farrukhabad, Sitapur, Shahjahanpur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Bareilly, Pilibhit, Rampur, Aligarh, Badaun, Bulandshahr, Sambhal, Hapur, Amroha, Moradabad, Meerut, Bagpat, Bijnor, Muzaffarnagar, Shamli and Saharanpur**.
Meanwhile, moderate to heavy rain with thunderstorms is expected at isolated locations in Chitrakoot, Mahoba, Banda, Hamirpur, Fatehpur, Jalaun, Jhansi, Kasganj, Bareilly, Rampur, Aligarh, Badaun, Bulandshahr, Sambhal, Amroha, Moradabad, and Bijnor.
Dr Sunil Pandey, Meteorologist at Chandrashekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology (CSA), Kanpur, stated that monsoon activity is currently active in the state. He stated that over the next few days, many locations may experience cloudy skies, light to moderate rain, and thunderstorms. Given the potential for strong winds and lightning during the rain, people should avoid open spaces, trees, and electric poles.
According to Dr Pandey, the slight drop in temperatures due to the rain may provide relief from the humidity and heat. However, after the rain stops, humidity may return in some areas due to increased humidity. Kanpur has also recorded good rainfall in the recent past due to active monsoon conditions.
In view of the weather department’s forecast, people have been advised not to stay in open fields during thunderstorms. Also avoid standing under trees and, if possible, stay inside a safe building. Farmers have also been advised to carry out agricultural work keeping in mind the weather conditions.
