Modern lifestyle, job pressure fuel mental health tragedy in Noida
Noida, August 31: Rising mental stress in the industrial city has led to nine suicides, including six women, over the past three days, with doctors attributing the surge to depression caused by modern lifestyle pressures, unemployment, academic strain, failed relationships, and growing loneliness.
Police Commissioner Lakshmi Singh’s media in-charge Umesh Naithani said on Monday that Rajkumar (46), son of Ram Murti Singh, a native of Hari Nagar, Delhi, who worked in a university located in Sector 125 of Police Station Sector 126 area, committed suicide last night by hanging himself from the latch in the laundry room located in the university campus. He stated that Sector 126 police arrived at the scene and took the body into custody and sent it for a post-mortem.
The media officer stated that Nishika (23), daughter of Hanuman Prasad, a nursing student living in the Knowledge Park area, committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in her hostel. He stated that police arrived at the scene after receiving information about the incident and took the body into custody and sent it for a post-mortem. He stated that she was studying nursing at Sharda University. During the investigation, police determined that she was seeking marriage. Her family had insisted she marry after completing her studies, causing her distress.
The media officer stated that Sanjana (19), a young woman, committed suicide by jumping from the Kulesara Hindon Barrage in the Ecotech-3 area last night. According to him, she was in love with a young man. Her family was demanding dowry. His boyfriend had refused to marry her when his demands were not met. He stated that the search for the woman’s body is ongoing. Her body has not been found as of this morning. The NDRF and police are searching for the body.
He said that Jyoti Panda (30), wife of Sudesh Kumar, a resident of the Phase-3 police station area, committed suicide by hanging herself from a fan at her home on Sunday night. He said that the woman had been married just two years ago. Upon receiving information about the incident, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Greater Noida, arrived at the scene and in his presence, the body was taken into custody and sent for post-mortem. He said that the Phase-3 police station is investigating the matter.
He said that in another case, Ankita (19), daughter of Tejram, a resident of village Garhi Chaukhandi in the Phase-3 police station area, committed suicide by hanging herself from a fan at her home on the night of August 29th. He said that the police, who arrived at the scene, took the body into custody and sent it for post-mortem.
He said that Tanu (19), daughter of Vijendra Singh, a resident of village Bahlolpur in the Sector 63 police station area, also committed suicide by hanging herself from a fan at her home late on the night of August 29th. He said that the police have taken the body into custody and sent it for post-mortem.
He stated that Vinay (29), son of Nepal, a resident of the Dadri police station area, committed suicide by hanging himself from a fan at his home on August 29th. He stated that the Dadri police have taken custody of the body and sent it for postmortem. Similarly, Rohit (31), son of Sukhbir, a resident of the Sector 113 police station area, committed suicide by hanging himself from a fan at his home on August 28th due to mental stress. He stated that the Sector 113 police have taken custody of the body and sent it for postmortem.
The media in-charge stated that Khushboo, wife of Praveen, 35, a resident of the Dankaur police station area, committed suicide by consuming poisonous substance at her home on August 28th due to mental stress. He stated that the police have taken custody of the body and sent it for postmortem.
When contacted, Dr N.K. Sharma, a senior physician in Gautam Buddha Nagar and former president of the IMA, stated that people have become so busy in modern life that they are unable to express their feelings openly.
He said that electronic surveillance and social media have distanced people from each other. He added that unemployment, academic stress, and love failure are among the factors driving children to take suicidal steps.
He added that today’s generation is increasingly lacking in tolerance. Children are becoming aggressive and angry over small matters. This is also a reason for suicide.
