PM Modi discusses West Asia turmoil with Iranian Prez

Bishkek, August 31: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit here on Monday. The two leaders exchanged views on India-Iran relations, as well as recent developments in West Asia and the rapidly changing regional situation.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Prime Minister expressed concern over the rising tensions in the region and reiterated India’s consistent position that all issues must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. He also stressed the need for continued efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region.

Modi emphasized the need to ensure freedom of navigation and commerce, saying that civilians and civilian infrastructure should not be harmed under any circumstances. He also underlined the need to ensure the safety of commercial vessels and maritime personnel.

The Prime Minister reiterated India’s commitment to close cooperation with Iran in multilateral organizations, especially BRICS and the SCO. He invited President Pezeshkian to visit India to participate in the BRICS Summit and said he looked forward to his visit.

Earlier, on the sidelines of the SCO Summit, the Prime Minister also met with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Modi shared a photo of their meeting on the social media platform X, describing it as a wonderful meeting. 

Modi said that cooperation between India and Armenia is expected to further expand in various sectors, including defense, information technology, space, education, and pharmaceuticals. Trade and investment relations between the two countries will also be further strengthened in the future.
