Azam Khan sent to 14-day judicial custody by special PMLA court in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, November 01: The Senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader and former cabinet minister in the Uttar Pradesh government, Azam Khan, was sent to 14-day judicial custody by the special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Ghaziabad on Sunday.

He was produced in the court by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). When reporters asked Azam Khan if he would like to comment on the matter, he said in a frustrated and helpless tone, “What is there to say now?” Meanwhile, several SP leaders also reached the court premises.

Azam Khan was taken into custody by the ED as soon as he was released from Rampur jail on Saturday evening after being granted bail by the Allahabad High Court in two PAN card cases. He was produced in the PMLA court on Sunday. This case relates to an investigation into alleged financial irregularities and money laundering at Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar University and the Jauhar Trust associated with it.

The ED has already attached property worth crores of rupees belonging to the university. The agency was seeking custody of Azam Khan for questioning in this case. However, the court ordered him to be remanded in judicial custody for 14 days. He was subsequently sent to Dasna Jail in Ghaziabad.

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav has reacted sharply to this development. He has accused the ruling party of taking action out of political vendetta.
