
Tragedy in Vivek Vihar: Nine lives lost in devastating blaze, family of five among the dead
New Delhi, May 03: At least, nine people who lost their lives in the fire that broke out in a four-storey residential building in Vivek Vihar Phase-1 of the national capital Delhi on Sunday morning have been identified. Five members of the same family were burnt alive in the massive fire, police informed.
According to the police, the bodies of five members of a family were found from the rear flat on the second floor. The deceased have been identified as Arvind Jain (60), his wife Anita Jain (58), son Nishant Jain (35), daughter-in-law Aanchal Jain (33) and one and a half year old grandson Master Akash Jain. The body of Shikha Jain (45) was recovered from the first floor. The bodies of three members of another family were recovered from the third floor, identified as Nitin Jain (50), his wife Shaili Jain (48), and son Samyak Jain (25). Naveen Jain (48), who suffered burn injuries, has been hospitalized. Details about his condition have not yet been released.
According to the police, the Vivek Vihar police station received a PCR call about the fire at around 3:48 am. Police, fire brigade, and other teams immediately arrived at the scene (house number B-13, Vivek Vihar Phase-1). High flames were rising from the second, third, and fourth floors. Firefighters and police conducted a joint rescue operation, rescuing approximately 10-15 people trapped in the fire.
Twelve fire engines were called in to control the fire. The fire has been extinguished. According to Fire Department spokesperson AK Malik, nine people have died in the accident. The fire spread from household items stored in six flats in the building. Nine charred bodies were recovered from various floors during the relief and rescue operation.
Preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have been caused by a short circuit or other technical reasons. A detailed investigation is underway to determine the exact cause. Police are also examining the building’s fire safety systems, exit routes, and construction standards. The entire area is in mourning following the accident.
